How to Answer "What Are Your Weaknesses?"

TL;DR: This question trips people up because they either overshare or give a fake answer that fools no one. Here's a better approach.

Pick something real, not a disguised strength

Interviewers have heard "I work too hard" or "I'm too much of a perfectionist" hundreds of times. Naming an actual, specific weakness signals self-awareness, which is what the question is really testing.

The structure that works

State the weakness plainly, give one concrete example of when it showed up, then explain the specific action you've taken to manage it. Keep it to 3-4 sentences total.

Example: "I used to avoid delegating because I thought it was faster to just do things myself. On my last team, that meant I became a bottleneck during a product launch. I now block 30 minutes every Monday to explicitly hand off tasks, and I've gotten much more comfortable letting go of the small stuff."

What to avoid

  • Weaknesses that are core requirements of the job you're applying for.
  • Anything that suggests a pattern the employer would need to manage around constantly.
  • Ending on the weakness itself instead of the growth.
