How to Talk About Being Laid Off in an Interview

TL;DR: Layoffs are common and rarely a red flag on their own — especially when framed factually and confidently.

State it plainly

"My role was eliminated as part of a broader restructuring/reduction in force" is enough. You don't need to over-explain or express excessive regret.

Don't badmouth the company

Even if the layoff felt unfair, keep your explanation neutral and forward-looking.

If it happened more than once

If you've been through multiple layoffs at different companies, it's worth briefly noting the broader context (e.g., a specific industry downturn) so the pattern doesn't read as being about you personally.
