How to Ask for a Promotion

TL;DR: Build the case before the conversation, not during it.

Document impact over time

Keep an ongoing record of specific accomplishments and their measurable impact, rather than trying to reconstruct a year of work in the days before the conversation.

Time it strategically

Raise it after a clear win or during a natural review cycle, not immediately after a setback or during a company-wide hiring freeze.

Come with a specific ask

Rather than a vague "I'd like to grow," name the specific title, scope, or compensation change you're asking for.
