Vice President, Technology – Epic Systems
An executive leadership opportunity is available for a Vice President, Technology – Epic Systems, who will serve as the enterprise-wide leader for shaping and executing the strategic vision for Epic technology across the organization. This role is accountable for the full lifecycle of Epic system capabilities, ensuring alignment with the enterprise Order to Cash value chain and broader business objectives, especially within the diagnostics reference laboratory setting.
This position must be based (hybrid) in Secaucus, NJ, or Schaumburg, IL. The pay range is $300,000 – $350,000/year plus a 40% AIP Target and Long-Term Incentive compensation. The role requires the ability to travel 25-50%.
Role Summary and Strategic Epic Mandate
The VP of Technology is the definitive authority for Epic within the organization, responsible for driving the multi-year technology strategy, overseeing all phases of implementation and optimization, and leading significant transformation efforts. The role requires deep technical expertise in multiple Epic modules tailored for diagnostics and strong executive leadership skills to build teams, manage vendors, and drive organizational change.
Key Responsibilities:
- Epic Strategy & Vision: Drive the Epic technology strategy, ensuring alignment with the Order to Cash value chain, operational workflows, and diagnostics priorities. Develop and execute a multi-year Epic strategy aligned with growth and digital transformation goals.
- Full Lifecycle Oversight: Oversee all phases of implementation, including system design, build, testing, go-live execution, and post-live stabilization. Own all Epic development and configuration and the supporting engineering teams.
- Technical Expertise: Serve as the technology expert across all Epic modules (e.g., Beaker, Resolute, Bridges, Welcome, MyChart), guiding system architecture, interfaces, and infrastructure planning.
- Integration & Compliance: Ensure seamless integration with ancillary systems and compliance with interoperability standards (HL7, FHIR, LOINC) and regulatory standards (HIPAA, CAP, CLIA). Lead technology design sessions and risk mitigation related to Epic integrations.
- Team & Transformation Leadership: Build and lead a team of Epic-certified experts and external partners, fostering a culture of excellence. Champion change management and adoption strategies (using frameworks like ADKAR or Kotter) to ensure sustainable user engagement and smooth transitions.
- Optimization & Support: Drive continuous optimization of Epic modules to maximize ROI. Establish the ongoing support model to maintain and develop additional capabilities within the implemented Epic products.
- Executive Advisory: Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, translating technical capabilities into strategic business value and outcomes.
Required Experience and Technical Qualifications
The ideal candidate is an executive-level technology leader with deep experience in healthcare, a long track record of Epic-focused technical leadership, and specific expertise serving the diagnostics industry.
- Experience (Required):
- 15+ years of experience in healthcare technology, leading development and delivery.
- 10+ years of Epic-focused technical leadership with proven success in leading large-scale Epic implementations.
- Lab experience is required (diagnostics reference laboratory experience strongly implied).
- Epic Technical Depth: In-depth knowledge of the development and configuration of Epic Systems software, including applications such as Aura, Beaker, Resolute, and MyChart for Connectivity, Orders, Results, and Billing workflows.
- Transformation & Leadership: Proven ability to drive large-scale transformation and change management in complex matrixed environments. Experience in building large delivery teams and reskilling existing staff.
- Standards Knowledge: Strong knowledge of healthcare integration standards (HL7, FHIR), data security, and compliance (HIPAA, CLIA, CAP).
- Skills: Strong vendor management skills set. Excellent communication and influencing skills, and a Lean training/mindset/experience is preferred. Programming skills in languages such as C#, Java, or Python are a plus.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Health Informatics, Engineering, or related field is required (Advanced degree/MBA preferred).
