IT Digital Support Engineer – Thermo Fisher Scientific (Remote)

This Digital Support Engineer role within the Materials and Structural Analysis Division (MSD) is a specialized hybrid of IT consulting and infrastructure engineering. You will be responsible for the seamless integration of high-end scientific digital solutions into complex customer IT environments, ensuring remote diagnostic capabilities and system reliability.
- Location: Remote (Idaho and surrounding states)
- Experience: 5+ years in IT/SW infrastructure; 25% regional travel.
- Core Tech: Linux, VMware/KVM, Kubernetes, Docker, Ansible, Networking (VLANs/Firewalls).
- Focus: Pre-installation consulting, automated deployments, and remote health monitoring.
Pre-Installation Consulting & Infrastructure Integration
You will act as a technical consultant during the pre-installation phase, partnering with Sales to design how Thermo Fisher’s digital solutions will integrate with a customer’s local infrastructure. This requires deep knowledge of network technologies, including firewalls, routing, and VLANs, to ensure that sophisticated scientific equipment can communicate securely and effectively.
Automated Deployment & Virtualization
The role involves performing automated deployments using configuration management technology like Ansible. You will manage and troubleshoot systems hosted on VMware or KVM infrastructure and utilize containerization tools such as Docker and Kubernetes to maintain the software landscape. You will also support “first-of-a-kind” deployments for newly introduced systems.
Remote Diagnostics & Performance Troubleshooting
A critical responsibility is ensuring that all delivered systems are configured for remote diagnostics and health monitoring. You will conduct high-level troubleshooting of software and infrastructure bottlenecks that impact the performance of precision instruments. This includes monitoring Linux-based systems and utilizing ICT best practices to maintain agreed-upon SLAs.
