DevOps Engineer / SRE Platform Engineer – Kubevirt/Kubernetes
Ford Motor Company is undergoing a transformation of its infrastructure solutions and is seeking a DevOps / Site Reliability Platform Engineer to support next-generation applications, including internal business, mobile, and autonomous vehicle requirements. This role emphasizes the Kubernetes/Kubevirt ecosystem to meet rapidly increasing data and compute requirements primarily within on-premises datacenters.
This is a Remote position in the United States. While remote, you will be expected to relocate if you are not within 50 miles of headquarters, as you must be on-site a minimum of 1-2 days per week. Visa sponsorship is not provided.
Role Summary and Kubevirt/OpenShift Mandate
This Engineer will design and operate infrastructure, including Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization (Kubevirt), collaborating with a geographically distributed team. A key focus is driving and shaping new solutions that improve the developer experience by reducing toil and complexity on the platform.
Key Responsibilities:
- Platform Maintenance: Upgrade and maintain OpenShift Virtualization Specific Operators.
- Kubevirt Management: Manage OpenShift Virtualization Namespaces/Permissions.
- Automation: Develop automation related to Provisioning, Day 2, Decommissioning, and Migration.
- Collaboration: Participate in code reviews, technical designs, and collaborate with team members regarding code standards and assignments.
- Culture Change: Help drive and shape the culture of IT toward a more nimble and iterative methodology.
Required Experience and Technical Qualifications
The ideal candidate has a strong background in Linux, hands-on experience with Kubernetes and Kubevirt, and demonstrated proficiency in CI/CD automation and modern scripting/programming.
- Experience (Mandatory Minimums):
- 3+ years of strong Linux knowledge on multiple platforms (RHEL, Ubuntu, SUSE).
- 1+ years of experience in the use of Kubevirt and Kubernetes.
- 1+ years of experience in the use of virtualization and container technologies.
- 2+ years of experience with GIT and CI/CD pipelines using Tekton, Argo, GitHub Actions, and/or Jenkins.
- 1+ years of experience with Prometheus/Grafana for monitoring.
- 1+ years of in-depth use of Cloud-based PaaS and IaaS (GCP and Azure preferred).
- Technical Proficiency:
- Demonstrable proficiency in Kustomize/Helm.
- Demonstrable proficiency in at least one programming or scripting language (Go, Python, and/or Bourne Shell preferred).
- Demonstrated knowledge of RESTFUL API concepts and JSON formats.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
- Supervisory/Soft Skills: Ability to work effectively in a team environment; team leader capability is desired. Exceptional technical writing skills (run books, platform architecture, etc.).
Note: This is a salary grade 8 position.
