Backend Engineer I, Claims Reconciliation (Remote, US)
A contact in our network has shared an opening for a Backend Engineer I, Claims Reconciliation at Alma, a mission-driven company dedicated to simplifying access to high-quality, affordable mental health care. Alma achieves this by making it financially viable and easy for therapists to accept insurance, which helps them grow their practices sustainably. With a network of over 20,000 therapists and availability in all 50 states, Alma provides a comprehensive suite of tools that assist providers in running and expanding their businesses. The company has secured significant funding and has been recognized as one of Inc.’s Best Workplaces in 2022 and 2023.
This is a remote position for a mission-driven professional to join the Claims Reconciliation team, a group responsible for managing all actions after an insurance claim is submitted and a response is received. This is a chance to contribute your technical skills to a cause that has a tangible positive impact on people’s lives and the mental healthcare ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities and Technical Focus
As a Backend Engineer on this scaling team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping Alma’s features, services, and architecture. The ideal person for this role loves to collaborate with other teams to design and build amazing digital experiences that are not only functional but also intuitive and user-centered.
Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Understanding the User: You’ll start by gaining a deep understanding of Alma’s members—mental health providers—and their workflows, pain points, and operational needs. This empathy-driven approach is key to building truly effective solutions.
- Design and Development: You will design, develop, and implement features that are both maintainable and scalable, using modern web technologies. While the team is language-agnostic in interviews, experience with one or more common web frameworks is required. The tech stack includes Python, Django, MySQL, and Linux.
- Building for Scale: A significant portion of your work will involve developing internal-facing features and processes around claims reconciliation that can operate efficiently at scale.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: You will work closely with Alma managers, Product Managers (PMs), and designers to conceptualize and build solutions for practical problems facing Alma’s members.
- Ensuring Quality: You’ll ensure that all applications and services you develop meet Alma’s high standards for software, including robust performance, scalability, and security.
What Makes You a Great Fit
Alma is looking for an engineer who understands that successful software development is a collaborative process that involves communication, experimentation, and iteration. The ideal candidate will have 1-3 years of experience as a backend engineer with a proven track record of building products at scale.
To be successful, you must have:
- Web Technologies Experience: Experience with web technologies and one or more common web frameworks.
- Automated Testing: Proven experience implementing automated testing platforms and writing unit tests to ensure code quality and reliability.
- Version Control: A proficient understanding of code versioning tools, particularly Git.
- Collaborative Mindset: A genuine enjoyment for customer-centered software development and a desire to collaborate closely with a team of engineers, designers, and product managers.
- Data-Driven Approach: A desire to experiment and use research and data, where appropriate, to make informed, data-driven decisions.
This role offers a competitive salary band of $105,200 – $150,200. Alma operates as a remote-first company and provides a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, a 401K plan, and a range of stipends for therapy and wellness, co-working spaces, and a one-time home office setup. They also offer flexible PTO and comprehensive parental leave plans. This is a perfect opportunity for a passionate engineer who wants to use their skills to make a meaningful difference in the world of mental health.
