Assistant Director of eRA IT Services (Remote, Colorado)
An opportunity is available for an Assistant Director of Electronic Research Administration (eRA) within University Information Services (UIS) at the University of Colorado System Administration. This leadership role is vital to supporting CU’s Research mission by managing the implementation and support of the InfoEd eRA software and other systems used for grants, compliance, and financial management of sponsored projects across all four campuses.
This is a full-time, University Staff position. Applicants must be Colorado residents or able to relocate to Colorado within a month of starting employment. This role is eligible to work remotely within Colorado.
The anticipated hiring range is $143,000 – $147,000, plus a comprehensive benefits package including a 10% mandatory 401(a) employer contribution.
Role Summary and Research IT Strategy Mandate
The Assistant Director serves as the primary UIS point of contact and product manager for the InfoEd eRA suite. The role balances direct staff management, stakeholder relations, vendor coordination, and strategic oversight to ensure the stability and continuous improvement of critical research administration systems.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Team Supervision: Directly supervise the eRA Functional team (Solution Managers and Business Systems Analysts), including recruiting, training, work prioritization, performance evaluation, and mentorship.
- eRA Service Oversight: Ensure operational support of the core eRA service, including modules for Pre-award management, System-to-System submission, non-financial award management, human subjects management, and conflict of interest management.
- Stakeholder & Governance: Serve as the primary facilitator for the eRA Portfolio Steering Committee and build strong relationships with campus end-users, IT support partners, and Research Administration/Compliance offices.
- Product Management: Serve as the UIS Product Manager for InfoEd, coordinating communications on system roadmaps, updates, and maintenance activities with Business Relationship Managers (BRMs) and stakeholders.
- Vendor & Issue Management: Manage the InfoEd vendor issue resolution process, prioritizing tickets and coordinating vendor activities for new functionality, maintenance, and defect resolution.
- System Lifecycle: Coordinate system upgrades, new feature evaluation (including risk assessment), and manage system analysis studies to enhance end-user experience.
- Financial & Compliance: Develop budget requests, work with staff to provide cost/time estimates, and ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget. Maintain knowledge of “grants.gov” and major sponsor agency policy changes.
Required Experience and Qualifications
The ideal candidate is an experienced IT applications manager with a background in complex, enterprise-level systems, proven managerial skills, and the ability to work effectively with diverse senior administrative groups.
- Experience (Required):
- Six (6) years’ professional experience managing IT applications, projects, or services related to the support of an eRA or similar system.
- Two (2) years’ experience managing personnel (including developing/mentoring direct reports) AND managing projects/services with proven strategic and tactical execution skills.
- Experience working closely and effectively with a diverse group of senior administrators.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or equivalent professional experience (may be substituted year-for-year).
- Knowledge/Skills:
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with proven ability to effect and influence change through collaboration.
- Knowledge of ITSM (Information Technology Service Management) principles and management best practices.
- Technical aptitude, requirements management, and ability to assess and articulate risk variables.
Preferred Qualifications
- Eight (8) years of professional experience, and three (3) years in a managerial or supervisory role.
- Experience working in a large, complex research university with multiple campuses.
- Functional application experience in a Grants and Contracts or Compliance-oriented role.
- Experience with PeopleSoft Finance/HCM.
