An opportunity has come through our network for a Data Warehouse & BI – Data Modeler at a prominent firm in the Health and Human Services industry. This critical contract position is located in Menands, New York, and requires the successful candidate to work on-site, serving a vital role within the Enterprise Information Management (EIM), Data Warehouse, and Business Intelligence team. This team provides essential support to the Office of Mental Health, making this position a chance to directly contribute to a public service mission. The ideal professional will be a meticulous, detail-oriented individual with exceptional analytical skills, capable of working in close collaboration with business stakeholders to enhance the overall data quality and integrity of enterprise-wide systems.

The core of this position is centered on the art and science of data modeling. The person in this role will be the architect behind the data, responsible for the design and maintenance of the very blueprints that govern how data is structured and stored. A primary responsibility will be to meticulously review existing data models and provide expert recommendations for changes. This work is not simply about making minor tweaks; it’s about a comprehensive evaluation to ensure that current models can effectively support both new and existing data requirements. The data modeler must have a forward-thinking mindset, anticipating the needs of the business and designing solutions that are scalable, efficient, and robust.

A significant part of the job involves deep-dive data analysis. The candidate will be expected to analyze source system data to identify and eliminate redundancies and duplication. This requires a sharp eye for detail and the ability to trace data lineage to its source, ensuring that the data warehouse is a clean and reliable source of truth. The modeler will also be tasked with maintaining the conceptual, logical, and physical data models, along with all corresponding metadata. This is a crucial function that ensures all data elements are properly defined, documented, and aligned with business needs. The conceptual model provides a high-level view of the data, the logical model defines the relationships between data entities, and the physical model translates this into the actual database design. The proper management of metadata is key to this process, as it provides the context and definitions necessary for everyone—from data analysts to business users—to understand and use the data correctly.

The role also demands strong problem-solving skills, particularly in the realm of data quality. The modeler will perform data analysis, discovery, and profiling to identify the root causes of data issues. This involves using various tools and techniques to examine data sets for inconsistencies, errors, and missing values. Once issues are identified, the modeler must work directly with business teams to resolve these challenges, acting as a liaison between the technical and business sides of the organization. This collaborative approach is essential for ensuring that business needs are met while maintaining technical standards. Additionally, the modeler will be a key contributor to the team’s quality assurance process, taking on the responsibility to review models created by peer data modelers to ensure that all work adheres to established standards and best practices. This peer-review process is a cornerstone of the team’s commitment to quality and consistency.

To excel in this role, the candidate must possess an extensive background in data modeling and database design, with a minimum of 66 months of experience in developing and maintaining logical and physical dimensional data models. This experience should include a deep understanding of core data modeling concepts such as star schema and snowflake schema, which are fundamental to designing effective data warehouses for business intelligence. The ability to architect sophisticated data migration strategies is also essential, ensuring that data can be moved efficiently and safely from source systems into the warehouse without compromising integrity. Hands-on experience with the ERStudio data architect data modeling tool is a mandatory requirement for this position, with a minimum of 66 months of experience demonstrating proficiency with this specific tool.

The ideal candidate will also have substantial experience in relational data management, including a minimum of 66 months of design and development experience using Oracle technologies. This indicates a strong background with a leading database platform, which is critical for the firm’s infrastructure. Additionally, a minimum of 66 months of experience with SQL programming is required. The ability to write complex, efficient SQL queries is fundamental to data analysis, profiling, and the overall maintenance of the data warehouse.

This is a contract opportunity to work with a leading organization in the Health and Human Services industry, providing a unique chance to collaborate with a skilled team and make a tangible difference in the overall data quality of critical enterprise systems. The role provides an exceptional opportunity to utilize and hone your skills in developing and maintaining complex logical and physical dimensional data models within a mission-driven environment. Experience with regulatory standards such as HIPAA requirements or similar standards, as well as a familiarity with NYS Accessibility Standards, is a definite plus and speaks to the specific nature of the work in this sector.
